Our Climber Safety Test
If you have already taken a Belay Safety Class, you can choose to take a Belay Test. You will only have one opportunity per day to pass the test. Proficiency at the following will be required to receive a belay certificate card:
- Ability to tie a figure eight knot and figure eight follow through knot tied into the correct location on the harness and to perform a safety check on the knot.
- Ability to correctly put on and adjust a harness and perform a safety check.
- Ability to correctly thread an ATC belay device (or other UIAA approved friction device).
- Ability to foster clear and concise communication (commands) between the climber and belayer.
- Ability to demonstrate flawless rope handling technique, continuous contact on the rope with the break hand and effective breaking and lowering of a climber.
LEAD CLIMBING:
- All lead climbers and lead belayers must first pass the City Beach Rock Club "Lead Test". The Lead Climbing Certificate card must be visible when lead climbing.
- All clips must be made safely before the entire body passes them, and in the order that they appear on that climb. Also, both Carabiners on the final, double anchor, must be clipped.
- After all climbers in a party attempt ONE climb, the party must turn over the route to waiting parties.
- Hangdogging, or hanging to work a route, will not be permitted when there are climbers waiting to use that particular section of the wall.
- Lead climbers must know how to recognize back clips and z-clips, and realize that they are dangerous and must be reversed before climbing on.
- If two conflicting climbs intersect, the second party to leave the ground must yield at a safe distance that won't endanger either party in the event of a sudden fall.
- Quick Draws or other hardware cannot be removed or replaced except by City Beach Rock Club Staff.
- If a second will be top roping the lead, a minimum of two anchors must be used for the tope rope set-up.
- Your City Beach Rock Club Lead Certification card must be worn on your harness at all times when lead climbing or lead belaying in our facility.
- Lead Tests will be given on routes of a 5.9 or harder rating. The route will be chosen by the City Beach Rock Club Staff.
- You will only be allowed one lead test per day.
ANY CLIMBER NOT ABIDING BY THESE GUIDLEINES WILL BE EXPECTED TO LEAVE THE CITY BEACH PROPERTY WITHOUT REFUND AND MAY HAVE CLIMBING PRIVILEDGES SUSPENDED FOR AN ALLOTMENT OF TIME TO BE DETERMINED BY CITY BEACH ROCK CLUB MANAGEMENT.
