Route Setting

At the City Beach Rock Club, we consider our climbing routes to be our best product! We strive to maintain the highest quality standards for our routes and require our route setters to complete extensive training to assist them in developing their route setting craft. The Rock Club has invested in the latest climbing holds from manufacturers such as So ILL, Franklin Holds and E-Grips and strives for an eight week route turnover rate. The following are the criteria we use to assess our route quality:

Safety: We use finger friendly holds and ensure no gaps are present between the hold and wall when possible. We use set screws to prevent spinners and all spinning holds are replaced in a timely manner. We keep in mind clipping stances, fall zones, pendulum swings and how these will affect the climber, other climbers or spectators.

Aesthetics: We strive for appealing, clearly demarcated routes and thoughtful use of holds to mimic outdoor climbing features.

Sustained Movement: We strive to produce enjoyable climbing routes with sustained difficulty of movement and varying crux heights and styles.

Flow: Difficult to describe but similar to sustained movement. We strive to set routes with nice clean lines and a flow that mimics outdoor climbing situations.

Size and Orientation of Holds: Out vast inventory of holds of various size and shape allow our route setters to set challenging routes using a wide range of hold designs, sizes and materials.

Quality Over Quantity: We strive to set thoughtful, fun and inspiring routes and take advantage of our facilities diverse wall terrain and natural lines and there is always something new to try.

Fairness: When setting routes, our route setters keep in mind height and gender differences but also understand that that climbing is an individual endeavor with some excelling over others regardless of the route setting parameters. For our programs, we set specific routes tailored to the goals of the class participants and the instructor desires.

Grading Consistency: We strive to keep our route difficulty ratings consistent and accurate. When in doubt, we always grade higher to avoid sandbagging.

Customer Interaction: We always welcome route quality feedback from our members and day users. Route surveys are available at the front desk in addition to a route feedback board posted in the gym.
