Our second Average Joe competition was an even bigger success in the first!

AVERAGE JOE: PART ONE

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Our first Average Joe Bouldering Competition was a huge success!

We wanted to host a bouldering competition for our community that catered to all skill-levels of climbers because let’s face it, most climbing competitions are reserved for the climbing elite that can do one-arm pull-ups easier than us mortals can brush our teeth. Saturday, November 12, marked the beginning of our competition series. There was great energy in our gym as people pushed their limits, had fun, and made friends.

Are you signed up for our next Average Joe Competition yet? If not, then you should do it now. Click here to register.

All the cool kids are doing it!

THE WINNERS!

THE RESULTS!

HALLOWEEN MEMBER NIGHT!!!

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

You should show up...in costume!

Come to our bi-monthly member night  Thursday October 27th! A few areas will be lit with black lights, but otherwise the rest of the lights in the gym will off, so be sure to bring a headlamp or you can purchase one from us for $20.  Gordon Biersch will also be sponsoring the night with a beer tasting, and $3 pints for the night. Make sure you don your best Halloween costume for our costume contest and win some prizes. You will also have a chance to score some extra guest passes to bring in your friends if you can complete our scavenger hunt. Best of all, if you have any friends looking to sign up for a membership be sure sure to bring them along, because for one night only we are having NO INITIATION FEE!!!

New Routes!!!

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Greetings City Beachers,

I am proud to announce that all of our lead routes in the cave have been stripped and replaced with bright and shinny new routes. We have put up two 5.10′s and two 5.11 for y’all to play on. So grab your partner and rope and do-si-do on down to test your endurance.

We also re-set one of the auto-belays and put up two other routes around the cave. All this is hot on the heels of replacing all of the boulder problems in the cave. Your feedback on our routes is always welcome…

Something To Hang Our Hat On

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Climbers Spencer Whaley, left, Laine McCord, Darcy Black and Brandon Louie, right, prepare to climb a wall at City Beach on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 in Fremont, Calif. (Aric Crabb/Staff) ( ARIC CRABB )

A couple of weeks ago Laura Casey, a reporter with the Bay Area News Group, visited our City Beach Rock Club to feature in her column, Trimming Trends. Laura’s previous climbing experience consisted of a few guided trips to Joshua Tree over the last 3-4 years; she had never tried indoor climbing.

We climbed together for over an hour, and I was hopeful when she left. I was pretty sure she had a good time; however, I had to wait and see what she was going to say in her article. The next week, our Climbing Team Coach and Route Setter, Jacob Padilla, walked into my office with a newspaper and a smile. I was blown away by the nice things that Laura said about our gym. Immediately, I called my wife to ask her to buy a copy of the daily paper. Her response was an excited, “I’m way ahead of you, Honey; I’ve already bought 18 copies.”

So thank you, Laura, for your kind words. And thank you to all of our awesome members and staff that make this place so special. She enjoyed the climbing; however, I believe it was her interaction with the people here that really impressed her. We can all be proud of the wonderful things said about our beloved sport and the place were we like hang out. Check out the article if you have not already…
