The folks that built the pyramid were paid in beer, according to  Tom Standage, author of A History of the World in 6 Glasses. While we can’t exactly expect to get paid in alcohol for our daily grind, we can look forward to that fairly new tradition called the “Happy Hour.”  But ever wondered why it’s called the Happy Hour? (Other than the obvious…)

Since I’m a bit of a geek about term origins, I decided to look it up and thought I’d share it with you.  The not-so-shocking news is that the term was coined in the United States NAVY. The happy hour was the slang term for time of day of sailor entertainment including boxing matches and drinking.   The term itself gained steam after the Saturday Evening Post published an article on military life.  Not long after, “happy hour” was a common term, with restaurants and bars alike offering options to draw folks in.

So we owe our thanks to the US Navy and the Saturday Evening Post for our Happy Hours!  Cheers!

Be sure to swing by City Beach during Happy Hour. Our specials run from 4 to 7, every Monday through Friday.  And Wednesday nights are Happy Hour All Night — with free tables games with purchase (including billiards, Foosball, air hockey and more…)  See you then!
